The History of the iPhone

The iPhone is a high-end smartphone with Internet and multimedia ability, designed and marketed by Apple Inc, makers of the Apple Mac, the Macbook, and the iPod. Originally released back in 2007, the iPhone functions as more than simply a phone, allowing users to take advantage of the integrated digital camera (including text messaging and visual voicemail for leaving visual messages for friends), as well the on board media player.

The multimedia playback is especially proficient on the iPhone, and individuals can download their entire music collections onto their handset and listen to them, just as they would with an iPod. In fact, an iPhone essentially functions in the same way an iPod does, just with extra features. iTunes is central to this – Apple’s universal media player, and owners of the iPhone can play their songs, podcasts and videos in the software and navigate themselves around the interface that is identical to the one featured on Apple Macs, Macbooks, and Powerbooks.

The smartphone has excellent connectivity, what with email and web browsing capability, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing users to connect to the Internet from just about anywhere in the world.

The front of the phone is dominated by an extremely large touchscreen, which, when pressed, can navigate to any application or feature on the phone. The Internet browser, Safari, is also used by scrolling up and down the screen, and page rendering times are very low.

Another unique selling point of the iPhone is its dedicated App Store, which features over 200,000 apps (and growing) that users can download to their personal phones. These applications can range from satellite navigation aides, to time-passing games, to news apps and weather predictors.

The very first iPhone was announced on January 9th 2007 after months of rumour and conjecture as to its design and specs. The original iPhone was first released, not long after, on June 29th 2007, in the United States of America, before being marketed in Europe. Further versions were released on July 11th 2008 (iPhone 3G) and June 19th 2009 (iPhone 3GS). The latest iPhone4 was released on 24th June 2010 and it’s newest features include a 5 mega pixel camera, HD video recording and retina display. It’s been Apple’s most successful launch product to date, selling over 1.7 million in the first 3 days of its release.
